What am I expected to do?

Select to complete 2 of the following options. Be prepared to share your learning and insights with the group. You will have about 15 minutes to complete each option. Keep track of your choices here. You can work independently or collaboratively as the option allows.

Option A: Math Tool

  1. Create and Use Number Bead Strings using the materials provided.

  2. Watch the grade-level appropriate video from Dr. Nicki about ways to use this tool.

  3. Use a Rally Coach structure to try one of the following problems using your Number Bead String.

    • 3 x 6

    • 6 x 10

    • 2.3 + 4.7

    • 423 rounded to the nearest 10

    • 42.3 rounded to the nearest whole number

    • 1/10 of 100

  4. Discuss the mathematical concepts, such as the Properties of Operations, that the use of this tool allows students to ‘see’.

Option B: Article

  1. Choose one of the following articles to read:

  2. Use a Thinking Map Chart to organize your ideas or take-aways.

  3. Use Pairs Compare to discuss your ideas or take-aways.

  4. Email completed Thinking Map to: ckingeducation.307math@blogger.com.

Option C: Math Studio

This option allows you to deepen your content knowledge around a topic that you are currently teaching or going to teach.

  1. Visit the EngageNY’s Math Studio and select a video to watch.

  2. Make an anchor chart/poster that models the tools, models and strategies used in the video based upon the topic of focus. Use One Pen, One Paper in the creation your chart/poster.

  3. Take a picture of the anchor chart/poster and email it to: ckingeducation.307math@blogger.com.

How many squares?

How many squares?

option D: solve the problem

Solve the following math problem. Use a variety of tools, models and/or strategies to show your thinking. Convince others of your solution.

Begin with a Notice and Wondering on a Tree Map. Make use to use tools and/or diagrams to prove and document your thinking and findings.

Take a picture of your proof and email it to: ckingeducation.307math@blogger.com.

Option E: Intervisitation

Plan an intervisitation with a fellow teacher. Your focus will be on the use of one of the following pedagogical structures:

  • Rally Coach

  • Information Gap

  • Find and Fix My Error

These structures can be combined with any other structures, such as One Pen, One Paper, as deemed useful by the teachers.

Use this time to:

  • Determine a time for the intervisitation

  • Lesson to be taught

  • Focus of the feedback

Email your AP to provide this information.
