WHAT AM I EXPECTED TO DO?

Select 3 of the following options to complete. Be prepared to share your learning and insights with the group. You will have 30 minutes to complete each option selected. You can work independently or collaboratively as the option allows.


Option A: Deepen Math Content

Based upon your grade level, select a focus, then as you watch and/or read, note information that is new to you or information that you have questions about. Discuss with your group.

Grade 3 and 4: Multiplication

Grades 4 and 5: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions


Option B: Math in PracticE JIGSAW

  1. Assign a range of pages to each group member based upon your grade level Module.

  2. Take 15 minutes to review your section.

    • Record things to remember.

    • Make a model of 1 activity or problem for your group to try out.

  3. Share your findings with your group. Explain why this item, visual, problem concept, activity, etc. resonated with you.

Grade 3 and 4: Multiplication

  • Gr. 3: Modules 1 - 3

  • Gr. 4: Module 5

Grades 4 and 5: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

  • Gr. 4: Module 8

  • Gr. 5: Module 7


Option C: Released Question Adaptations

Select your upcoming grade level topic. Review the NYS Released Items. Sort the questions into categories (Conceptual, Procedural, Visual, Use of Tools, Vocabulary and Symbols). Some questions could fit into more than 1 category. Also, look at the number used, the contexts and how questions begin. Discuss and record trends that you notice and the implications for instruction.

  • Grade 3 Division (3.OA.2, 3.OA.3, 3.OA.4, 3.OA.5 no released items with division, 3.OA.6, 3.OA.7, 3.OA.8, 3.OA.9)

  • Grade 4 Multiplication (4.NBT.5, 4.OA.1, 4.OA.2, 4.NF.4)

  • Grade 5 Multiplication (5.NBT.5, 5.NBT.7, 5.NF.4, 5.NF.5, 5.NF.6)


Option D: The Party Time Problem of the Month

  1. Do the Levels A and B ‘Party Time Problem’ and then discuss how you solved.

  2. Go to Inside Mathematics and select the Grade 4 or 5 video to watch. Click on the grade level transcript (Grade 4, Grade 5) to better follow along with the video. As you watch the video, please note what the teacher did to make the problem come alive for his/her students. Also, how did discourse play a role in deepening student understanding of the problem?


Option E: Critical Friend Feedback and Next Steps

Meet with your Critical Friend to debrief about classroom visits. Discuss your findings and determine next steps. Record next steps in the Critical Friends Note Taking Template. Each person should have 15 minutes to: 1) Receive: Warm, Cool and Hard Feedback 2) Discuss feedback 3) Discuss and record ‘Next Steps’


Option F: INDEPENDENT PLANNING TIME

Select this option if you would like some independent time to plan on a topic of your choice. You can choose to work with your grade-level team or work independently. Please document your work and email what you have done to Ms. Asari at the end of the 30 minutes.
