2019 - 2020 Session #2 Summary of Work

Schools, Focus and Next Steps

Day 1: Sandel

What profession learning activities took place? Consultant met with teachers in Grades K - 5 for appx. 45 minutes per session. Consultant supported to teachers in unpacking an upcoming unit of study. We documented our work by taking pictures and shared that work with teachers.

What are the next steps for the school? Have the teachers review the work completed and plan out units of study incorporating some of the idea from the session.

What are the next steps for the consultant? If contacted, provide additional resources to support teacher planning for next unit of study. Plan for next visit.

Day 2: Webber

What profession learning activities took place? Consultant met with teachers in Grades K, 1st, 4th, and 5th focusing on the areas/concepts that the teachers identified. In Grade 1 the consultant observed 2 classrooms for about 15 minutes as was able identify 3 areas (See: Slide Deck) to target. She met with the Grade 1 teachers and discuss what was observed and suggested next steps.

For Grades K and 4th the consultant modeled lessons in the classroom. In Kinder she modeled ‘Teacher Tell Me’ and discussed with the teacher how to use this strategy to promote student agency and peer-to-peer teaching in learning. The Grade 4 teacher viewed this lesson. In Grade 4 she modeled how to do ‘Teacher Tell Me’ with using the concept of multi-digit numbers to reinforce place value and rounding concepts.

For the Grade 5 teacher the consultant worked directly with the teacher and showed how to use Zearn.org as a resources for math lessons with the entire class. The consultant also show rounding conceptually using the number line. The consultant modeled with students how to say decimal amounts and how to compare decimals while the teacher watched.

What are the next steps for the school? The Math Coach wanted to select 3 or 4 pedagogical structures such as ‘Teacher Tell Me’ and ‘Rally Coach’ across the school. For this to happen, the school would have to select the 3 or 4 strategies, model then with teachers, and then have teachers try then out with their classes. This could be followed up by teacher intervisitation to each others classrooms.

What are the next steps for the consultant? If contacted, provide additional resources to support teacher the implementing of various pedagogical structures. Plan for next visit.

Day 3: Arden

What profession learning activities took place? Consultant met with teachers in Grades 3 - 5, plus the teacher support personnel (CRN, Coach) all day. The principal and the consultant outlined the agenda for the day. The consultant modeled ‘Teacher Tell Me’ in 2 classrooms and also implemented a task in another. For the task that was teachers also did the task and we analyzed student work. We were able to discuss, sort and name the strategies that students used. The teachers began to create their own ‘Teacher Tell Me’ activities to implement. A web link was posted with materials for teachers to access.

What are the next steps for the school? Support teachers in implementing the “Teacher Tell Me’ activities created. Discuss and plan with teachers how to use the process for task analysis to help determine how to plan out future lessons and how to compact units of study based on what students know and understand.

What are the next steps for the consultant? If contacted, provide additional resources to support teacher the implementing of various pedagogical structures. Plan for next visit.

Day 4: Carver Lyon

What profession learning activities took place? The consultant was asked to provide a 45-minute workshop on understanding academic rigor for grades K - 5. The link to the resources provided are here. During the workshop sessions consultant was able to make suggestions and model how word problems might be scaffolded by using strategies like:

  • Line at a Time

  • Removing the question

The consultant was able to view instruction in the math immersion Chinese and Spanish classrooms. The consultant did a task with the 5th grade class and model how to first have the students work independently, then how to have them collaborate to further each others thinking, while the teacher asked assessing and advancing questions.

What are the next steps for the school? Implement the strategies suggested. Consult an ESL consultant and dual language/immersion specialist to better support Immersion classrooms.

What are the next steps for the consultant? Plan for next visit. Suggest an ESL consultant for continued work with the school.

Day 5: J.P. Thomas

What profession learning activities took place? Consultant met with teachers in Grades 3 - 5 for appx. 90 minutes per session. Consultant supported to teachers in unpacking an upcoming unit of study in Grade 3. In Grade 3 the consultant worked with a small-group or students as teachers to support them in using strategies that helped students say multi-digit numbers. In Grades 4 and 5 the consultant implemented a task with teachers and then with students. The group then gather data from the student work samples and discussed the implications for instruction.

What are the next steps for the school? Use the strategies for bracketing in numbers as a means of seeing the place value periods to support students in Grades 3. Share the strategies with the Grade 4 teachers for amounts up to the million period. In Grades 4 and 5 teachers should continue to analyze student work and work to name and describe student solution pathways using precise mathematical language.

What are the next steps for the consultant? If contacted, provide additional resources to support teacher planning for next unit of study. Plan for next visit.
