Snacks: Jackie has two kinds of raisins for snack. Jackie has 7 raisins in all.

Virtual K/1: Acting out Multi-step Word Problem

Grade: Consecutive Addends

  1. Write three addends that follow each other on the number line, e.g., 2+3+4 or 4+5+6

  2. Find the sum.

  3. Write a another equation by writing the middle addend three times, e.g., 3+3+3 or 5+5+5

  4. Do you notice any patterns? Why do thing that this is happening?

Grade 2: Math Story Visuals

  2. Make up a math story using the images in the Math Story Visual.

  3. Solve your math story.

Recommendations:

  1. Make word problems visual by color coding each sentence to make it easier for the students to unpack the problem a line at a time. Use images of things in the problems.

  2. Display work on an interactive whiteboard for all students to see.

  3. Use visuals so kids can “see” vocabulary terms.
