K - 2 SESSIONS - February 22nd

Session 1: Implementing and Assessing Fluency & Number Sense Routines

How will this help my students? Ever wonder if Number Talks and other fluency and number sense routines are helping students progress and you really want to know if you are using your time wisely?

What will I learn?

  • What am I evaluating when I am gathering formative assessment data about fluency and number sense routines?

  • What are some ways to track student progress when consistently using fluency and number sense routines?

Session 2: Beyond Flash Cards: Using Games and Activities to Promote Discourse and Conceptual Understanding

How will this help my students? Memorization without making meaning is meaningless and does not support student’s long term mathematical dispositions or growth. As teachers we want efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy with understanding.

What will I learn?

  • What does it mean to be fluent and to have number sense?

  • What are some simple games/activities that I can do to promote, build, and deepen conceptual understanding while we get students talking about the mathematics that they are doing?

Session 3: Getting from Here to There: Planning a Learning Progression

How will this help my students? Students are all at different stages of development at all times in one classroom! As a teacher we need to plan pathways to meet students where they are and move them forward.

What will I learn?

  • What are some research-based resources that I can use to determine my next steps with specific students?

  • How can I plan out progression cycles and measure student progress?

3 - 5 SESSIONS - February 22nd or 23rd (This is a repeated session. Only select 1 date.)

Session 1: Strategies for Getting All Students to Comprehend and Solve Word Problems

How will this help my students? Most word problems are visualizable and if students can “see” the problem they have a better chance of solving the problem correctly.

What will I learn?

  • What are 4 strategies that I can use immediately to support students in visualizing word problems?

  • How can I use manipulatives and mathematical sketches as tools for visualization?

Session 2: Using Games in Grades 3 - 5 to Target Priority Standards

How will this help my students? We learn through play and as teachers we can use simple materials and game ideas to raise DOK Levels and scaffold activities to target priority grade-level standards.

What will I learn?

  • How can I create or adapt games to promote student math talk and conceptual understanding?

  • What are some simple, easily accessible materials that I could use to make games for students to play?

Session 3: Math Centers for Test-Readiness

How will this help my students? Students learn from each other. We just need to provide the structures to facilitate the process.

What will I learn?

  • How can we use and adapt test-readiness strategies to work in small, student-led groups?

  • How can I build in self-assessment and reporting of progress?

6 - 8 SESSIONS - February 23rd

Session 1: Using Manipulatives and Math Models to Accelerate Learning

How will this help my students? For a variety of reasons, many students are not working at grade-level expectations. Through the use of math manipulatives and math models we can help students accelerate towards doing grade-level content.

What will I learn?

  • How is acceleration possible with struggling learners?

  • What are some go-to math manipulatives and models that can be used to help students better access and understand grade level content?

Session 2: Using Worked Problems and Other Techniques to Get Students to Unpack Word Problems

How will this help my students? Proficient problem solvers unpack word problem before considering solutions. Teachers can use techniques and instructional strategies that support more “patient problem solving” and understanding.

What will I learn?

  • What are 4 strategies that I can use immediately to support more patient problem solving?

  • How can I get my students to talk more about their thinking and to evaluate the thinking of others when problem solving?

Session 3: Using Games in Middle School to Target Priority Standards

How will this help my students? We learn through play and as teachers we can use simple materials and game ideas to raise DOK Levels and scaffold activities to target priority grade-level standards.

What will I learn?

  • How can I create or adapt games to promote student math talk and conceptual understanding?

  • What are some simple, easily accessible materials that I could use to make games for students to play?

TESTIMONIALS from the South Carolina Summer 2022 Math Institute

“Christine and her team have truly given me life in regards to teaching math. I'm so excited to take back and share with teachers and students!

“Working with CKingEducation was a thought-provoking and insightful experience. I was challenged to think "outside the box" and to rethink the ideas about math that have been ingrained in me throughout my life as a student and teacher. As I continue my work as a teacher and life-long learner, I will be open to the idea that even if I don't agree with someone's idea, being open to the possibility will make a world of change.”

“CKingEducation provides an inclusive and supportive environment to push educators to learn strategies to teach our students. One of the best PDs I have been to!”

“I’ve used CKingEducation products for years and they work well for intervention and ice breaker activities.”

This training was right on time! I don't have enough words to explain how enlightening this was. I am recharged and ready to explore new math adventures with my babies! Thank you!”
