The focus of this workshop was allow participants to engage research-based strategies that support teaching in dual modality instructional settings. This session focused on the use of math tools (virtual and authentic), pedagogical structures that allow for partner/group work to include virtual and face-to-face learners, and examine 3 ways to gather formative assessment data in dual modality settings.
This was a free online session given on January 16th at 2:30 PM EST. Here are some of the resources created by participants. To get more information about what Math Story Visuals are and how to create and implement them please go to www.ckinged.com/mathstoryvisuals. You can see a recorded introducing Math Story Visuals below along with a “How-to” video…just scroll down.
Word Problems created by some of participants based on the Math Story Visuals:
Four friends went to a donut shop. They were only going to buy 1 donut each because the donuts cost 2 dollars each, but they were having a special sale to buy 6 and get 6 free, so they bought a dozen donuts to share and pay for equally. How much did each friend have to pay?

The Power of Pattern with equations
Session Summary: Would you like your students to be able to solve for x in an equation like 1/2x + 5 = 9 using mental reasoning and not a procedure? This workshop focuses on using our natural powers of patterns with problem strings to support students in thinking more critically about how to solve equations without jumping to meaningless rote procedures.
Examples:
Maybe You Don't Need to Teach the Procedure
Session Summary: This workshop is about the why. Why does that procedure work? Why weren't other ways taught to me? In this workshop we will address some of the enduring procedures that we teach and may not know others ways to address, such as cross multiplication for proportional equations and keep, change flip. This session provides alternatives to some procedures that we have been taught and continue to teach.

Using Pedagogical Structures to Get Students Talking and Thinking
Session Summary: Learn about and experience research-based pedagogical structures that foster students' critical thinking, evaluation, analysis, listening skills, ownership of learning, collaboration, discourse, and engagement. Participants are introduced to 5 structures that can be used all year-long. The structures embody the Mathematical Practices and encourage students to evaluate and question information.

IS EQUAL GROUPINGS IT? Multiplication Using Tools, Models, and Strategies
March 8, 2019, 2:00 PM – 3:15 PM, Ruffner 116
Repeated addition. Equal groupings. Distributive property. Teaching multiplication should not be string of ways to solve problem with leaps from one strategy to the next. This presentation outlines tools, models, and strategies to help teachers identify and choose appropriate pathways based upon where students are, opposed to where the textbook is.
